Three gentle reminders for the mum who feels like she’s “just surviving”

When I became a mom abroad, I knew it would be difficult, but I was perhaps a bit naive as to just HOW difficult it would be, for so many reasons. It can also be isolating, exhausting, and overwhelming. Without the safety net of family close by, even the smallest tasks can feel heavy. If you’re running on broken sleep, juggling work and childcare, or just trying to keep your head above water – you’re not alone.

When I was in the thick of early motherhood, I felt like I was constantly failing. I wish someone had whispered these reminders to me, so today I’m passing them on to you.

You’re not failing just because it feels hard.

Motherhood is challenging enough, even with a strong support system. When you’re navigating it abroad – or without a village – it’s natural that it feels heavier. Hard doesn’t mean wrong. It simply means you’re carrying a lot, and still showing up every single day. That’s strength, not failure.

Your well-being matters too.

It’s easy to put yourself last when little ones depend on you for everything. But your well-being isn’t optional – it’s the foundation. Protecting your energy, even in small ways, makes you a more present and resilient mum. Take the walk, drink the coffee, breathe deeply. You matter, too.

Joy exists in the small, ordinary moments.

When the big picture feels overwhelming, focus on the tiny joys: a giggle during bathtime, five minutes of quiet with your coffee, the way your child slips their hand into yours. These aren’t extras – they’re the moments that carry you through.

If you’re stretched thin right now, please hold onto this: you will find your rhythm again. This season won’t last forever.

If these reminders spoke to you, I’d love for you to share this post with another mum who might need to hear it today – or leave a comment with the one that resonated most. And if you want more gentle encouragement, tips, and honest stories from motherhood abroad, make sure to follow along on instagram – I’d love to walk this journey with you.
