Motherhood is beautiful – but it’s also a season where it’s so easy to lose yourself. The long nights, endless laundry, and toddler meltdowns can make you feel like you’re running on empty. And when you’re raising kids abroad without family nearby, that “survival mode” can feel even heavier.
But here’s the thing: you can start to feel like yourself again. It doesn’t have to be a massive overhaul or an elaborate routine – just a few small, daily habits can make a big difference. These are the ones that helped me climb out of the trenches and reconnect with myself.
A Morning Ritual That’s Mine
It doesn’t have to be fancy. For me, it’s sitting down with a hot coffee before my kids are fully awake, going over my to do list for the day. That 10 quiet minutes sets the tone for my day. Maybe for you it’s journaling a few lines, stretching, or listening to a podcast. The important thing is that it’s yours.

Skincare in 5 Minutes
I used to think skincare had to be complicated, so I often skipped it. But just a cleanser, serum, and moisturizer is enough to make me feel human again. Taking care of your skin isn’t vanity – it’s a way to say, “I matter too.”

Moving My Body – Even Just a Walk
I’m not talking about gym memberships or intense workouts (no thanks). But a walk around the village or a 15 minute pilates workout clears my head, boosts my mood, and gives me energy I didn’t think I had. It’s free, simple, and doable.
A Quick Reset for the House
I used to think I needed hours to clean – but setting a timer for 10-15 minutes and tackling one small job changes everything. Sometimes it’s running the vacuum, sometimes it’s throwing a load of laundry in. It doesn’t make life perfect, but it creates breathing space.
Fuel That Supports Me
I feel my best when I’m mindful about what I put into my body. I’ve started adding collagen to my morning smoothie and giving my kids their vitamins with breakfast – it’s one less thing to think about, but it helps us all feel supported.
If you’re a mum in the thick of it, especially one navigating motherhood abroad without a big support network, please remember this: you don’t need to change your whole life to feel better. Start with one small daily habit, and let it grow from there.
I’d love to know – which of these habits do you already do, and which one do you want to try this week? Share in the comments below, or send this to a mum friend who could use a little encouragement today.
